Sri Lanka — where to go and when

3 destinations covered
Sri Lanka packs an improbable number of climates into an island you can cross in a day, and the three places published here sit in three of them. The western port capital keeps its layers side by side: a colonial administrative quarter, a bazaar running on its own rules street by street, temples of four religions within a few hundred metres of each other, and a new financial district being built out into the sea. In the middle of the island, the old royal town around its artificial lake holds the relic temple, the processional route and the institutions of the last independent kingdom. Higher again, a village on the southern rim of the hill country looks down a notch in the plateau towards the plains, with tea on every slope and a railway threaded across stone viaducts. Costs come in at roughly four-fifths under French levels, among the lowest anywhere on this site, which is what makes a long and slow trip realistic.
When to go
No single month works for the whole island, because two monsoons strike opposite coasts at opposite times of year. Our data gives the western capital no recommended month at all, while the hill village gets February and March. Use altitude as the guide instead: the coast peaks at 31.9 °C in the same month the highlands sit at 22.3 °C, a gap approaching ten degrees on an island a few hours wide. The stretch to plan around on the west coast is September to November, which brings 337.3 mm, 307.9 mm and 308.6 mm in succession.
No single month clears our comfort threshold everywhere in the country at once. The table below gives each place its own favourable months instead.
The places we cover, side by side
| Place | Favourable months | Warmest month, avg. high (°C) | Coldest month, avg. high (°C) | Rainy days a year (≥ 1 mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo | none | 31.9 | 30.4 | 154 |
| Ella | February, March | 22.3 | 19.1 | 161 |
| Kandy | none | 34.5 | 30.4 | 136 |
Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
The railway is a reason to come and not merely a way of moving, since the hill line climbs through tea country on stone viaducts and the ride is the attraction. It is also slow and often full, so a reserved seat matters. Buses cover everything else, frequently and very cheaply, with a driving style that takes acclimatising to. Three-wheelers handle short hops; agree the fare first. The main airport is 28 km from the capital, and the royal town's own field 5 km out.

How long does a first trip need?
Two weeks is the comfortable answer and ten days the minimum that does not feel like a sprint. Distances look small and take longer than they should, because the roads wind and the trains are unhurried. A route linking the coast, the old royal town and the hill country fills a week on its own, leaving beaches or wildlife parks for the second.
Which coast should the beach days be on?
Whichever one is out of the monsoon when you travel. The south-west works from roughly December to March and the east through the middle of the year, and swapping coasts is the standard way of rescuing a badly timed trip. The island is narrow enough that this costs you a day of travel rather than a change of plan.
