Czech Republic — where to go and when

Czech Republic

1 destination covered

Prague survived the twentieth century architecturally intact, which is rare in central Europe and explains almost everything about visiting it. Gothic, baroque, art nouveau and cubist buildings stand side by side on the same street, a castle complex occupies the hill above the river, and the bridges have been in the same places for six hundred years. The consequence is crowding: the route between the square and the castle absorbs most visitors, while streets three minutes away stay quiet all day. Prices fall roughly a third short of French ones on our index, and the gap covers beer, food, transport and concerts, not merely the room. The Czech Republic suits travellers who like architecture as a continuous text rather than a list of monuments, who are happy to walk on cobbles for hours, and who will get up early once to see the old town before it fills, which is reliably the best hour of the whole trip.

When to go

June, August and September are the months the data supports. The warmest reaches 27.2 °C by day, which is comfortable in a city with shade and river air, while the coldest still manages 4.8 °C and slips just below freezing at night. Prague takes 542.2 mm of rain across 96 rainy days a year, with summer carrying the heaviest showers. The winter argument is atmosphere and lower prices, not weather.

Getting around

Three metro lines, an extensive tram system and buses run on a shared time-based ticket that must be validated at the start of a journey; the trams are also the cheapest sightseeing in the city. The historic core is compact enough to cross on foot, though the cobbles punish poor shoes. International trains reach Vienna, Berlin and Kraków in a few hours. The airport is 11 km out and connected by bus rather than rail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid the crowds in Prague?

Change the hours rather than the places. The bridge and the castle approach are quiet before nine in the morning and again after dinner, and unbearable between. Beyond that, one street back from the main route the city empties entirely: the districts across the river and south of the centre hold most of the architecture with none of the queues.

Is the Czech Republic good value?

Yes, and unusually broadly. Our index shows costs about a third under French levels, and the difference reaches everyday spending rather than only the hotel: a tram ticket, a meal in a pub away from the square, a concert in a church, a museum entry. Exchange booths in tourist streets are the one place to be careful.
