Where to go in June

June is the handover month. Lisbon, the Algarve and Bwindi reach the top for the first time, Nice and Sicily with them, and the Gulf has gone completely — Riyadh now reads 43.5 °C with nights at 26.9 °C. India leaves by the opposite extreme: Goa collects 28 days of rain, Kerala 30. What the table cannot show is daylight, and in June it weighs more than a degree: an evening lasting until eleven changes what a northern break can hold. The month is also a pricing staircase. The first fortnight is still shoulder season nearly everywhere; the final ten days are not, as the earliest school holidays open and coastal rates step up. And the score describes an ordinary day, not a fine one: the Atlantic coast varies far more between years than a single column suggests.

Three of them in detail
Algiers — Algeria
Algiers leads the June table at 26.5 °C by day and 20.9 °C at night with two days above 1 mm for 11.5 mm. The sea breeze keeps the afternoon civil where the interior no longer does. At 213 on our index it is by far the cheapest base of the month, and the airport is 15 km out.
Sicily — Italy
Sicily runs 28 °C in the afternoon and 19.6 °C at night with two days of rain, the balance August destroys. Its good season lasts four months only — May, June, September, October — and at 972 on our index the island slips just under France. The sea, meanwhile, still lags.
Lisbon — Portugal
Lisbon keeps 26 °C by day and 16.9 °C at night with three days above 1 mm and 12.4 mm. June sits inside a good season of seven months running from April to October, in a year counting 71 rainy days, and at 686 it sits well under French prices. The airport is 5 km out.
What to avoid this month
Five exits, one single reason: water. The Indian monsoon carries Goa to 28 days of rain and 726.3 mm, Kerala to 30 for 505.8 mm. The Gulf of Guinea does the same, Abidjan on 24 days and 509.6 mm, Lagos on 22 and 331 mm. Reykjavik adds its 15.
How the score is calculated
One formula, applied identically to the hundred places, on measured station records:
score = 100 − 3·max(0, |tMax − 25| − 3) − 4·max(0, rainyDays1 − 6) − 2·max(0, 12 − tMin)A place is flagged as one to avoid when it records 14 rainy days or more in the month, an average high of 34 °C or more, or an average high of 8 °C or less. Only the five lowest-scoring flagged places are listed.
