Denmark — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Denmark puts a blunt question to a tight budget, and Copenhagen asks it loudest. Our cost index places the country roughly a third above France, the widest gap among the northern capitals listed here, and it lands on restaurant bills and hotel rooms rather than on anything you do outdoors. What the money buys is a capital built around people instead of cars: cycle lanes with their own traffic lights, harbour water clean enough to swim in, a centre small enough to cross on foot, and design that is everywhere rather than exhibited. The city rewards a particular traveller, one happy to buy lunch from a bakery, hire a bicycle for the week and spend the saved money on a single good dinner and one museum. It penalises anyone who eats out three times a day. The landscape is flat and undramatic, so come for urban life, water and very long summer evenings.
When to go
June, August and September are what the figures support, and they are mild rather than warm: the warmest month reaches only 21.2 °C by day. That is the trade for enormous daylight, and the compensation for a winter whose coldest month averages 4.4 °C by day and goes dark in mid-afternoon. Rain here is spread rather than seasonal, 112 days of it a year, the wettest month collecting 76.5 mm. Carry a layer and something waterproof even at the height of summer.
The places we cover, side by side
| Place | Favourable months | Warmest month, avg. high (°C) | Coldest month, avg. high (°C) | Rainy days a year (≥ 1 mm) |

| Copenhagen | June, August, September | 21.2 | 4.4 | 112 |
Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
This is a cycling city before it is anything else, and hiring a bicycle for several days often costs less than the equivalent transport passes while covering far more ground. The metro runs around the clock and links the airport, 7 km out, to the centre in about a quarter of an hour. Regional trains cross the bridge into southern Sweden in well under an hour, which makes a day on the other side entirely practical. Parking rules are unforgiving.

Frequently asked questions
How do I keep Copenhagen affordable?
Move the spending outdoors. Harbour baths, parks, the canals and most of the waterfront cost nothing at all. Bakeries and street-food halls cover lunch for a fraction of a restaurant bill, and a hostel or a room beyond the centre is a short ride from everything. Budget one sit-down dinner instead of three and the national gap stops mattering.
Is summer worth it if the temperature only reaches 21 °C?
For most people yes, because the daylight matters more than the thermometer. In June the evening stretches past ten o'clock, which turns terraces, harbour swims and park dinners into the default way to spend a day. Treat 21.2 °C as comfortable walking weather rather than beach weather, plan around water and light, and the figure reads very differently.
