Ethiopia — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Addis Ababa stands high enough that a capital this close to the tropics needs a coat after dark, and that altitude is the key to almost everything a visitor notices. Ethiopia was never durably colonised, and the city shows it: its own script, its own calendar, hours counted from sunrise, a liturgical music and a fasting year developed apart from the rest of the Christian world, and a cuisine that resembles nothing else on the continent. Travellers arriving in expectation of a variation on a familiar theme spend their first day recalibrating. The place rewards curiosity more than sightseeing — museums holding some of the oldest hominid fossils ever found and the regalia of an imperial court, a market quarter that is a vast improvisation of trades and alleys, coffee roasted in front of you and poured in three rounds as a ceremony rather than a drink. Living costs are the lowest of any country on this site, about four-fifths under the French reference, and the city is the continent's main air crossroads, which makes it unusually easy to reach.
When to go
Five months clear our filter here, October through February, and altitude is the reason the rest stay usable at all: the warmest month, May, peaks at 26 °C, the coolest, August, at 20.6 °C, and January nights fall to 9.1 °C. Rain, not heat, is the real divider. July and August are the heavy weeks — 28 rainy days in July and 289.2 mm of water — while November and December are dry and clear, with one rainy day each. Those five months are the run most visitors should take; the wet months are greener and cheaper, and the mud is not a metaphor.

Getting around
A light-rail line crosses the capital on two axes, the first built in this part of the continent, and shared minibuses work by destinations called out at the door rather than by printed routes. App-ordered cars spare a visitor the negotiation and are what most end up using. Walking is pleasant in stretches and interrupted by pavements that are not. The historic circuit in the north is normally reached by domestic flight rather than by road, and the network is dense. The airport is 8 km from the centre.

Frequently asked questions
Is the capital a destination or a transit stop?
It works as both, and the transit case is the stronger one to start from: this is the continent's busiest connecting airport, 8 km from the centre, so a long layover converts easily into two days. Give it those two days and you get the national museum, the market quarter and a coffee ceremony without hurry. Give it a week and you will want the northern circuit instead.
Does the altitude actually affect visitors?
Enough to plan the first day around. Most people feel shortness of breath on stairs and sleep badly the first night, and it passes within two or three days. The practical answers are dull ones: land, do little, drink water, skip alcohol the first evening, and leave anything strenuous until day three. Evenings are cool year-round — 9.1 °C at night in January — so a warm layer belongs in the bag whatever the season.
