Where to go in November

November shuts the northern map and opens the mild-winter belt. Madeira, Djerba and Sidi Bou Said arrive together, and the Cape is in its spring. Around them the belt takes shape: Cairo, Tenerife, Crete, Santorini, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Essaouira. The clearest sign of the turn is the list to avoid, European from end to end for the first time since February, and already split between rain and cold. For anyone free of the school calendar this is the cheapest fortnight of the year in nearly all of Europe — cheaper than January, since the Christmas machine has not started and nothing competes for rooms. Two things the score keeps quiet: daylight is short even in the south, which compresses a visit far more than two degrees, and many island hotels have closed.
The ranking for November

12. Sidi Bou Said — Tunisia
Score 100.0Three of them in detail
Santorini — Greece
Santorini keeps 22.4 °C by day and 16.4 °C at night with two days above 1 mm. November ends a good season opened in May, and the wettest month follows immediately, in December. The airport is 5 km from Fira, and the caldera path is finally empty.
Madeira — Portugal
Madeira reads 25.2 °C in the afternoon and 18.8 °C at night, six days above 1 mm and 75.2 mm: the island is never quite dry, and its wettest month is January. Its good season counts ten months, November among them. Funchal's airport is 14 km from town.
Jerusalem — Israel
Jerusalem gives 25.2 °C by day and 14.9 °C at night, five days of rain for 50 mm — the first true showers of a year peaking in January. Its index of 1,365 makes it the costliest base of the month. Ben Gurion is 41 km away, Amman 74 km.

How the score is calculated
One formula, applied identically to the hundred places, on measured station records:
score = 100 − 3·max(0, |tMax − 25| − 3) − 4·max(0, rainyDays1 − 6) − 2·max(0, 12 − tMin)A place is flagged as one to avoid when it records 14 rainy days or more in the month, an average high of 34 °C or more, or an average high of 8 °C or less. Only the five lowest-scoring flagged places are listed.
