Qatar — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Qatar can be crossed in a morning, and that single fact shapes a trip here more than any other. Doha holds nearly everything: a crescent bay with a corniche along it, a rebuilt merchants' souk that turned into a genuine evening quarter rather than a film set, a restored downtown of shaded lanes, and two museums that would anchor a far older capital, one devoted to Islamic art on its own island, the other telling the peninsula's story from inside a building shaped like crystallised desert rose. The remainder of the country is the desert south, where dunes run down to a shallow inlet and the emptiness starts twenty minutes past the last roundabout. Costs land a third below French levels, and hotel pricing in particular behaves like a European capital rather than a Gulf bargain. The place suits short stays, stopovers extended on purpose, and travellers who want modern Gulf architecture with a serious cultural programme attached to it.
When to go
Mid-November to early March, and there is very little room to argue. Our readings put the peak at 40.7 °C in July, August close behind at 40.2 °C and its nights holding at 33.1 °C, conditions in which sightseeing becomes a series of dashes between doorways. Winter works properly instead, 22.5 °C in January, warm afternoons and evenings you can spend outdoors on the water. Rain is not a planning factor in any month, since the whole year delivers 74.7 mm, most of it in a few winter downpours.

Getting around
The airport is 3 km from the bay, which makes even a long layover usable. Three underground lines cross the built-up area and reach the museums, the souk and the outer districts, with free feeder shuttles waiting at the stations; fares are low and the network is the easiest in the region to work out cold. Taxis and app-booked cars fill the gaps. The dunes need four-wheel drive and someone who reads sand, which means a booked driver rather than a rental.

Frequently asked questions
Is Doha worth a stopover of one or two days?
It is close to an ideal stopover. The airport is minutes from the centre, the two major museums fit into a single day between them, and the souk is best in the evening, when a long flight has already ruined your sleep anyway. Two nights adds the desert inlet in the south, which tends to be the part people remember.
What can be done outdoors in summer?
Very little between June and September, honestly. The hours before eight in the morning and after dark are the usable ones; everything else happens indoors, and the city is built on that assumption, with air-conditioned walkways doing the work of streets. If outdoor time matters to you, move the trip to winter rather than trying to engineer around the heat.
