Saudi Arabia — where to go and when

2 destinations covered
The two places published here show a country pulling in opposite directions. AlUla is a sandstone valley in the north-west where a palm oasis threads for kilometres between eroded orange cliffs, and where the Nabataeans who carved Petra built their southern city: monumental tomb facades standing alone in open desert, visited by a small fraction of the numbers their Jordanian sister receives. Riyadh, in the middle of the peninsula, is the reverse — motorways, glass towers and walled compounds grown out of a mud-brick town that survives on its edge, with a national museum that treats the peninsula seriously and an escarpment an hour west where the plateau breaks off above an ancient seabed. Everyday spending comes in at around half the French level. Tourism is managed rather than open: timed tickets, shuttles and guides at the archaeological sites, and almost nothing a walker can reach unaided. The reward is archaeology in near-silence and the oddity of watching a country talk to itself; the cost is a trip with very little room for improvisation.
When to go
Five months are usable and the rest of the calendar is ruled out by heat, not by rain. Riyadh averages 44.6 °C in July and August, and the desert valley in the north-west is barely behind, so summer is not a question of tolerance but of daylight hours spent indoors. The window runs November to March: AlUla sits at 22.7 °C in January and drops to 11 °C at night, because sandstone loses its warmth fast. Rain is a non-event — six rainy days and 38.4 mm across a whole year there — and the clear nights are part of the point.

Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
The two are far apart and the practical link is a domestic flight; driving it is a full day on good roads. Riyadh is built for cars, with almost nothing a visitor covers on foot and rides ordered by app. AlUla inverts the scale but not the method: its sites run on shuttles from a central point, and walking between them is not offered. Distances everywhere are long and the road network is modern. The airports sit 27 km from the capital and 5 km from the valley.

Is a single night enough for the tombs?
Two is the minimum that works. Entry to the main sites is by timed slot with a guide, and the slots for different parts of the valley rarely line up on one day. A second night buys the older tombs cut high into a cliff, the inscription canyon and the abandoned mud-brick town, and lets you see the sandstone at both ends of the day, which is when it earns its reputation.
What should a first-time visitor know before booking?
Tourist entry is recent, so the habits of hosting are still being built and standards vary sharply between the polished sites and everything around them. Alcohol is absent, modest dress is expected of everyone, and shops and offices pause for prayer several times a day, which slows an itinerary. Distances are large, so book internal flights with the hotels rather than afterwards.
