Senegal — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Dakar stands at the end of a basalt peninsula that reaches further west than any other point of mainland Africa, ocean on three sides and a swell that never entirely stops. That position explains most of the city. Atlantic wind keeps the air moving while the interior bakes, the cliffs on the western edge give the city a shoreline instead of a beachfront, and the sea arrives in the streets as noise, salt and light. Behind it, the capital works as the hinge between the Sahel and the water: cattle, millet and cloth come down from the interior, fish and containers come in from the port, and the markets sit where the two meet. The reasons to travel here are cultural before they are scenic, since live music is a weekly habit rather than an event, and the island facing the harbour carries a memory visitors should prepare for. Costs land a little under three-fifths beneath French levels. The city is worked rather than displayed, and rewards travellers who like that.
When to go
The dry season is unusually long here, which is why our list runs from December all the way through to June. January to May record no day above 1 mm, and the annual total of 500.6 mm falls almost entirely between August and October, with 264.7 mm in August alone. Temperature works in the traveller's favour too, March being the coolest month at 25.2 °C and October the warmest at 31.8 °C, a spread most tropical capitals would envy. The weeks to avoid are the wet end of summer, when humidity climbs and some coastal roads flood.

Getting around
The international airport was moved out of town and now stands 43 km away, reached by a toll motorway and a shuttle coach; allow an hour. A suburban rail line also runs inland from the centre along that corridor. Within the city, shared minibuses and taxis do the work, and taxi fares are agreed before you get in rather than metered. The island in the bay is reached only by the passenger ferry from the port, a crossing of about twenty minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Is the capital walkable?
In pieces. The administrative grid on the plateau and the denser quarter beside it can be crossed on foot, and the road along the western cliffs is a genuine walk. Beyond that the city stretches far down the peninsula and the heat makes distance expensive, so most days end up combining one taxi with two or three walkable stretches.
What should a first trip include beyond Dakar?
Two directions open easily. North of the city, a colonial island town at the mouth of a river has a long history and a very different rhythm; south, the lagoons and mangroves of the coast make a quiet counterweight. Both are about half a day by road, which is why many visitors keep a base in the capital and travel out and back.
