South Africa — where to go and when

2 destinations covered
The southern hemisphere reverses the calendar, and in South Africa that one fact reorganises a European holiday: the warm, dry weeks fall between December and March, exactly when Europe has shut down for winter. What that buys is a peninsula city under a flat-topped mountain, with a cold Atlantic on one flank and a warmer bay on the other, and, an hour inland, a bowl of granite ridges filled with vineyards and oak-shaded streets. Costs run about three-fifths below French levels on our index, and the saving falls on meals and rooms rather than on the flight, which stays long whatever you do. The country also asks for planning that shorter-haul destinations do not. The two places published here are neighbours, but distances inside the country are continental, and practical advice about where to walk after dark varies by neighbourhood rather than by city, so ask locally instead of assuming. It suits travellers who want landscape, food and wine inside one small radius; it disappoints anyone expecting a single tidy sightseeing circuit.
When to go
December to March is the dry, warm stretch, topping out at 27.6 °C in February, and it overlaps the local school holidays, so rooms go early. The cool half of the year is the wet half: July holds 16.7 °C by day, falls to 8 °C at night, and older buildings are not heated. Rain is concentrated rather than relentless — June brings 13 rainy days, the whole year 78 — so even a winter week produces clear afternoons. April, May and October are the compromise our figures also approve, with fewer people about.
The places we cover, side by side

Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
No train a visitor would use connects the two places, so this is a road country. The motorway between the city and the wine valleys takes under an hour, and a hired driver rather than a hire car is the sensible answer on a tasting day. In town, app-ordered cars and the coastal bus line cover most needs; the minibus network is the local system and takes some learning. One airport serves both, 17 km from the city and 25 km from the valleys.

Does the cool half of the year rule out a visit?
No, but it changes the trip. Daytime still reaches 16.7 °C, the vineyards are quiet, rooms cost less, and the mountain is often in cloud rather than closed. Pack for indoor cold as much as outdoor, since heating is uncommon. If the whole point is swimming or a long ridge walk on a fixed date, take the December-to-March months instead.
How many days do the mountain and the vineyards need together?
Five is the sensible floor. Three for the city, because the summit, the peninsula road and the historic quarters each take most of a day and weather can cancel any of them, then two nights among the vines so the second day is not spent driving back. Adding the coastal route east is a separate journey and needs a week of its own.
