Hungary — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Budapest carries Hungary here, and it is really two towns that were stitched together in the nineteenth century: a hilly, castle-topped bank facing a flat grid of grand boulevards across the Danube. The result is a capital with imperial scale and post-socialist prices, which is exactly why it fills with weekend visitors. Thermal water runs beneath the city and feeds public bath houses that are municipal facilities rather than spas, one of the few places in Europe where a genuinely unusual experience costs about the same as a cinema ticket. Our index puts Hungarian costs roughly a third under French ones, and the difference shows everywhere: restaurant meals, transport, coffee, museum entry. The city suits travellers who like grand architecture without formality, who do not mind a district being shabby and lively at once, and who understand that the ruin bars everyone mentions are a night-time phenomenon in a handful of streets, not the city itself.
When to go
May through September is the run our data marks out, and it is a warm stretch by central European standards. The summer maximum reaches 28.6 °C by day, and the city records 80 rainy days a year and 572.7 mm of rainfall, with the wettest month collecting 74.5 mm. Winter is the real trade-off: the coldest month averages 4 °C by day, although that is exactly when the outdoor thermal pools make most sense.

Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
Four metro lines, trams along the river and a dense bus network mean no visitor needs a taxi. Tickets must be validated and are checked frequently, including at station exits. Suburban trains reach the Danube Bend towns in under an hour, and long-distance rail links Vienna, Bratislava and Prague from the same stations. The airport sits 18 km from the centre, served by a direct bus into town rather than by rail.

Frequently asked questions
How affordable is Budapest?
Distinctly. Hungarian costs run around a third under French ones on our index, and unlike some capitals the saving reaches food and culture rather than stopping at the hotel. A sit-down lunch, a bath house entry and a day of transport together cost less than a single restaurant dinner in many western European cities.
Are the thermal baths worth planning around?
Yes, and they change how a trip is structured. These are large public facilities, open year-round, busiest at weekends and best in the early morning or late evening. Bring a towel and flip-flops to avoid hire charges. In winter the contrast between cold air and outdoor pools is the point rather than an inconvenience.
