Namibia — where to go and when

Namibia

1 destination covered

Namibia reaches this site through one place, and Etosha is the right one to begin with: a salt pan so wide it reads as a white horizon rather than a lake, ringed by a handful of springs that animals have to come to because there is nothing else to drink. That constraint is the entire method here. You park at a waterhole, cut the engine and wait, and the traffic arrives in its own order, zebra in strings, elephants towards evening, giraffe splaying their front legs to reach the water. It is slower than tracking and it produces sightings denser than tracking usually manages. Costs land around three-fifths under French levels, though the arithmetic of a Namibian trip is governed by distance rather than by daily spending: fuel, a vehicle that tolerates gravel, and the days swallowed by crossing the country. The park rewards patient travellers happy to drive themselves, and it will frustrate anyone expecting dense forest, a guaranteed list of species, or the next lodge within walking distance.

When to go

March, May, June and July are what the figures return — March aside, at 9 rainy days, dryness does all the work: four consecutive months from June to September record no rain whatsoever, and the annual total stops at 321 mm spread over 39 days. The price of that window is cold, because this is high ground in the southern winter, and July mornings start at 6.4 °C before the afternoon climbs to 25.8 °C. Later in the dry season the sightings improve again while the heat turns punishing, reaching 35.2 °C in October. The green months from January onwards scatter the herds.

Getting around

There is no arriving here without a vehicle. The closest airport lies 126 km to the north, and the usual approach is a long run on tarred road from the capital followed by graded gravel inside the park, where speeds are held down and the reward for obeying is that you actually see things. A high-clearance car is enough; four-wheel drive is not needed on the main circuits. Allow a couple of hours between rest camps, and remember that the gates shut at sunset.

Frequently asked questions

How much time is Etosha worth?

Three nights is the sensible minimum and four is better if you have travelled far. Each day is built around two productive windows, early morning and the last two hours of light, with the middle of the day spent back in camp. Moving camp once lets you work different springs, since the animals along the eastern rim behave nothing like those further west.

Is a self-drive safari realistic for a first visit?

This is one of the easier parks to attempt alone. The main tracks are graded, the waterholes are signposted, and you are never asked to leave the car, which removes most of the risk. What you give up is a guide's eyes and the radio network between vehicles. A common compromise is to drive yourself and book one guided outing from camp.
