Rwanda — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Rwanda sits on the equator, lifted high enough that temperature stops behaving like a season: our figures separate its months on rain alone, and endorse June to September. Kigali, the way in, spreads over a series of ridges with valleys between them, so the capital reveals itself one slope at a time, offices on the crests, markets and workshops in the hollows, eucalyptus hiding the joins. The order strikes visitors immediately, with swept streets, planted verges, a plastic bag ban enforced at the border, and a monthly morning of community work when the whole country stops. What the city offers is not a monument list but a memorial that explains the nation and asks for several quiet hours, a market fed daily by the hills, and craft and painting workshops. Costs sit around two-thirds beneath French levels, with the gorilla permits that draw many travellers onwards standing well outside that logic.
When to go
Four months carry our recommendation, June to September, and the readings show why the rest do not: 28 °C in the warmest month against 25.4 °C in the coolest, a spread of under three degrees across the calendar, so rain is the only real variable. April, the wettest month, delivers 174.2 mm over 23 days, while July records 3.3 mm on a single day, in a year counting 153 rainy days in all. So the months to plan around are April and November, 23 rainy days each, chosen for the state of the ground rather than for any question of temperature.
The places we cover, side by side

Figures measured at the weather station nearest each place, then averaged over the warmest and the coldest months of the year — not over a fixed calendar season. Each destination page carries its own month-by-month table, its station and its sample size.
Getting around
The airport is 8 km from the centre, unusually close for a capital. Taxis and motorcycle taxis, the standard way people move here, cover the city cheaply; the riders are licensed and carry a spare helmet. There is no urban rail, and the hills make walking between districts far longer than a map suggests. Beyond the capital, long-distance coaches leave on fixed departures over good tarmac, putting the lake and the forests of the west within half a day.

Frequently asked questions
How long is worth spending in the capital?
Two days, and neither is filler. One of them belongs largely to the genocide memorial, which is demanding and should not be squeezed between other plans. The second covers the market, the craft and painting workshops, and the plain pleasure of a city built on ridges, where every crossing of a valley rearranges the view.
Is Rwanda only a gateway to the gorillas?
For many itineraries it is the entry point, and the forests north and west of the capital are genuinely the draw. But the country reads well on its own over four or five days: the lake in the west, a rainforest of monkeys and tea estates in the south, and road distances short enough that none of it requires a flight.
