Sweden — where to go and when

1 destination covered
Stockholm is built across fourteen islands where a lake meets the Baltic, and water is not decoration here but the actual geography of getting around. The old town is a medieval island of ochre facades; around it sit nineteenth-century boulevards, a preserved warship raised from the harbour mud, and an archipelago of thousands of islands beginning where the city ends. Our figures put Sweden only a few points above France, which regularly surprises people who file the whole of Scandinavia under expensive: the outlier is Norway, not this. Costs concentrate in restaurant meals and alcohol rather than in transport or entry fees. Sweden suits travellers who like cold water, design, and a capital that empties into the islands every weekend. It suits winter visitors too, provided they accept that daylight in December is a brief grey interval rather than a day. What they get in exchange is a capital with no queues at all and rooms at a fraction of the summer rate.
When to go
June to August is the season, and the figures are modest in temperature and generous in light: the warmest month reaches 22.4 °C by day, while the coldest manages 1.1 °C and falls to -3.8 °C at night. Stockholm is drier than most northern capitals, with 426.8 mm of annual rainfall spread over 86 rainy days. Midsummer brings light that barely fades, which is the real reason to come then; winter offers ice, low sun and noticeably cheaper rooms.

Getting around
The metro, buses and commuter trains share one ticketing system, and so do the commuter ferries, which means a boat between islands counts as ordinary transport rather than an excursion. Archipelago boats run further out on their own timetable and make the best cheap day trip from the city. Long-distance trains head north and south from the central station. Two airports serve the capital, 8 km and 37 km away, the nearer one much simpler to reach.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sweden as expensive as its reputation?
Less than people expect. Our index places it only marginally above France, and the difference lands on restaurant dinners and alcohol, which is where Nordic pricing genuinely bites. Transport, museums, coffee and supermarket food are all reasonable. A trip built around cooking, ferries and outdoor days costs far less than its reputation suggests.
Is the archipelago worth a day?
It is arguably the point of the city. Boats leave from the central quays and reach inhabited islands in one to three hours, passing thousands of rocky islets on the way. A single day out gives swimming, walking and a village or two. In summer the last returns are late enough that the day does not feel compressed.
